Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

Find out more about staying healthy while travelling.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

ThinkUKnow Program

ThinkUKnow for parents, carers and teachers

ThinkUKnow is a free, evidence-based cyber safety program that provides presentations to Australian parents, carers and teachers and students. It provides information on the technologies young people use, the challenges they may face, and importantly, how they can be overcome. Presentations are delivered face to face or digitally.

We aim to provide you with the tools to create a safer online environment for young people in your care. Our presentations cover what young people SAY, SEE and DO online.

The presentations cover topics such as social media reputation management, cyberbullying, ‘sexting’, online grooming, online gaming, inappropriate content, privacy management, identity theft, how to protect your devices, and how to report matters when things go wrong.

The program bridges the knowledge gap between adults and young people so that everyone has an understanding of the roles they play and what they can do if something goes wrong online.

What young people SEE online

We talk about challenges such as online grooming, ‘sexting’, cyberbullying and inappropriate content.

What you can do to support young people through online challenges.

We also explain how to report if something goes wrong.

What young people SAY online

What you can do to help support young people understand what they say online can be permanent. We call this our ‘digital shadow’.

This includes talking about being respectful online, thinking before you post, knowing what information is okay to share online.

What young people DO online

How they use technology to have fun online, such as applications (or apps), websites and social networks.

How they can handle their digital shadow, including their privacy and relationships online

What’s next after high school?

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

If they take both quizzes, they’ll get more refined suggestions. They can even create free online pinboards to shortlist the courses and jobs that interest them.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Launch into the future today

Use this tool to chat with your child about their post-school options in a meaningful way.

Inspire your child to find their career match today at LifeLauncher.nsw.gov.au.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling and numeracy. The assessments are undertaken nationwide, every year. This year the tests will occur during Week 3, Term 2. The dates are as follows:

Tuesday May 14th – Language Conventions and Writing

Thursday May 16th – Numeracy (both calculator and non-calculator assessments)

It is expected that every Year 7 and 9 student at St Clair High School will complete all NAPLAN assessments in full. At St Clair High School we set high expectations for each and every student and we encourage all students to apply themselves to each and every NAPLAN paper to full capacity to meet these high expectations.

Mental Health First Aid for Non Suicidal Self Injury

Please see attached information about a new group being delivered at Junaya Family Development Services – Mental Health First Aid for Non Suicidal Self Injury.
Junaya Family Development Services will be delivering this 5 hour long group for parents and carers who have children aged 12 years and over.

The term ‘non-suicidal self-injury’ (NSSI) describes a behaviour where a person deliberately or purposefully hurts themselves.
It is used to refer to self-injury that is not intended to result in death.
This course gives participants an opportunity to learn how to help someone who is engaging in self-injury.
This is an education course, to learn how to give first aid to others, and is not a therapy or support group.

If you would like more information about this group please contact us on 02 9621 3922. You will also find more information here www.mhfa.com.au

As with all of our programs, please contact the office to register for this group.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

FROM THE LABORATORY

Welcome back to all students in Year 7 to 12 from the Science Faculty. This year we will be continuing with excellent programs in Year 7-10 while students in Year 11 and 12 will continue to consolidate on the excellent HSC results in 2018.

The Science Faculty has the following teachers Mr Pabian, Miss Morrison, Miss Fernandez and Mrs Markou in 2019, we welcome back Mrs Chapple returning from maternity leave. Please refer to the School website for specific information on footware, mobile phone usage and Cosmos use in class.

Website

Science

Footwear

Students are required to be dressed in shoes that meet the School’s uniform code and be permitted to participate in Science laboratory work. To meet Health and Safety regulations students must have enclosed uppers that will not allow liquids to penetrate through to the foot.

Students who do not have the correct footwear will be excluded from practical work and given a written alternative. Your assistance in this matter is appreciated.

Mobile phones

Students have a responsibility to be committed to their own learning, to not interfere with the learning of others, and to support a safe learning environment where all can achieve.

Phones are not to be the cause of distraction in a classroom environment. In the Science Faculty we ask that Mobile phones are switched off and placed in bags before the start of the lesson. Students are able to use a mobile device in class only with the direct permission of the staff member responsible for that lesson. Examples of appropriate use of a phone with teacher permission include:

a) Completing internet research b)Using educational apps including calculators, stopwatch, thesaurus etc.Your support in this matter is appreciated.

Cosmos

The Science department has been successfully using an Australian science resource - Cosmos Lessons. Cosmos Lessons is truly the next-generation of science learning. Built by a team of Australian teachers and Scientists, it takes relevant, interesting science news and teaches the scientific concepts behind the news. The curriculum is accessed online, featuring rich explanations, videos, illustrations and simulations that are engaging for students.

We will be utilising Cosmos as part of our homework and enrichment programs throughout the year.

I encourage you to log in with your son or daughter and take a closer look at the rich materials, their work and the associated feedback they've received from us. The lessons are available via a password-protected website.

How to log in

In your web browser, simply visit: http://stileapp.com

You'll be asked for an email address and password, which the students will receive in 2018.

Cost

We spoke with a group of Kindergarten students to find out what they had to say about going against the herd. They had some wise words for us on how we can care, respect and support each other in our schools.

Let’s start the year off right and prevent student bullying happening in our playgrounds, classrooms and online. If a group of 5-year-olds know the difference between right and wrong, shouldn’t everyone?

Term One in iSTEM will see Year 9 students working on developing working Scientifically Skill with ASTE renewable energy kits to solve problems relating to electric circuitry and solar power.

The year 10 elective class has just completed testing their CO2 Dragster cars what a blast. (literally). The project has seen students design a Dragster from scratch, create a polystrofoam prototype that was tested in a wind tunnel. They then refined their designs based of their testing, and then moved towards crafting their balsa wood dragster, painting in team colours and then competing against others to find the fastest and best design. Sometimes accidents happen all part of learning process.

This term will see the class delve into the world of motion and engineering related to Bottle rockets. We will also be exploring the Engineering and Science concepts behind the rides at Luna Park.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

Australian business week

Our school has undertaken to run the Australian business week program as part of a student leadership, crossroads and personal development program. This program is mandatory for year 11 students at St Clair High School.

The Australian business week involves year 11 students for a one week period in which they participate in a business simulation program. Australian business week at St Clair High School is to be held in week 1 of term 4 2018 - Monday 15th October to Friday 19th October, 2018. the Australian business week awards dinner will be held on the Monday 22nd October at 6.30pm - 9pm at St Marys Band Club. Parents are invited to attend this evening to join in the celebration and to share in the child's success ( a letter will be issued at a later date to provide details to those involved). Teams will be awarded on their achievement in specific categories.

The Australian business week program is designed to encourage independent and cooperative learning skills and to develop an enterprise mindset prior to entering the workforce or proceeding with further study. It exposes participants to the issues of coping with stress and effective time management; both major challenges that students face in their final year of high school with the HSC.

How does the Australian business week work?

Year 11 are divided into teams of 8 and spend the five days having fun, while demonstrating their skills at running a business.

During these five days, students will engage in:

Managing a business thorough a computer simulation

Learning from guest speakers representing business and the community

Creating a new cafe idea

Creating a video, website and trade display to advertise the cafe

Giving a verbal and written business report of the weeks activities

Interacting with business people and teachers as facilitators

Following on from a successful initiative in previous years, once students have completed their teams trade displays we welcome parents to come and view these on the Friday morning when they are presented for judging. The students work incredibly hard on these displays and are rightly proud of the end results, as such we feel parents would feel similarly proud. Details of timings will be communicated home closer to the date.

NSW public schools’ finance system and a new bank account on 24 July 2017

Dear Parents and Carers

St Clair High School will transition to the new NSW public schools' finance system and a new bank account on 24 July 2017.

To ensure a smooth transition, there will be changes to the way we accept parent or carer payments.

Direct deposits: As of 23 June 2017, we will no longer accept direct deposits into our current school bank account as we prepare to close this account and transition to the new one. Any payments made using direct deposit after this date cannot be properly allocated to a student's account in a timely manner. Please ensure you have made any outstanding direct deposits before 23 June 2017.

EFTPOS payments: We will not be able to accept EFTPOS payments between 19 July 2017 and 24 July 2017. Please ensure that you have made any outstanding EFTPOS payments before 23 June, 2017. From 25 July 2017, EFTPOS payments will be accepted as before.

Cash and cheque payments: Between 23 June 2017 and 24 July 2017, we will also not be able to accept payments by cash or cheque as we prepare to close our current bank account and transition to the new one. Please ensure that you have made any outstanding cash or cheque payments before 23 June 2017. From 25 July 2017, cash and cheque payments will be accepted as before.

Online payments: As of 23 June 2017, we will begin to accept online payments using the Department of Education's Parent Online Payment (POP) system. A button to access this online payment system titled ‘$ Make a Payment' will be visible on the utility bar on the front page of our school's website at http://www.stclair-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/. By selecting this link, parents and carers will be taken to a secure Westpac QuickWeb payment page, from which they can make online payments.

Please note: As a Westpac-hosted solution cardholder and account details will be held securely, helping to protect the school and its customers from fraudulent transactions as well as assisting in meeting the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCIDSS) compliance requirements.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we transition to our new finance system. We are hopeful the addition of an online payment facility will prove of benefit to families. If you have any questions, please contact 9670 6700.

Special Religious Education (SRE) Years 7 - 8

Dear Parent/ caregiver,

Parents/caregivers in public schools have the right to have their children receive instruction in their preferred religious persuasion, where authorised teachers of that persuasion are available.
St Clair High School has been approached by the Baptist Union of NSW and St Clair Anglican Church to run Special Religious Education (SRE) on alternate weeks to Year 7 and 8 students. They are an authorised provider with the Department of Education.

These classes will take place on a Wednesday morning between 9.30am-10.00am. If students opt out they will continue with their normal day; attending year meetings or their formal assembly. Classes will commence on 29th March 2017.

Department of Education Policy states that students have the option to opt out of special religious education, by completing and returning the tear-off form below and returning it to the office. If the tear-off form is not returned students are required to attend SRE.

Students continue in the same arrangement each year, unless a parent/caregiver has requested a change in writing. At any time, you have the right to withdraw your child from the nominated lessons. A note to the Principal will affect this change.

Notice to all Parents and Guardians

Re: Stopwork by Members of NSW Teacher's Federation on Thursday 8th December, 2016

We have been notified that the NSW Teachers' Federation has directed members to stop work for up to 2 hours on the morning of Thursday 8th December, commencing at 8-30am. Please be advised that the majority of teachers, including executive staff, are likely to attend the stop-work meeting and therefore classroom lessons will not take place on Thursday morning. Only minimal supervision for those students who attend at that time will be provided. The Year 7 and 8 rewards day will continue to run as per normal. Teachers participating in this initiative will not be taking part in the stop work meeting. The year 10 clearance and year 11 enrolment day will continue but on an alternative timetable. Mrs Shepherd and Mrs Lowe will provide this information to year 10 students.
Canteen services will not be available until 11-15am.

The normal school day will commence with Period 2 at 10-30am. The remainder of the day will follow our normal timetable.

Yours sincerely,

Sally Smithard
(Relieving Principal)

Contemporary Learning Innovation - 2017

Contemporary Learning Innovation (CLI) is a subject that was introduced in 2016 to our year 7 cohort. This subject is designed to teach our students skills that will apply in everyday life and future jobs/ careers.
We focus on teaching our students to direct their own learning. This is where they build on their interpersonal skills as they are working with others through negotiation and cooperation.
The level of engagement from our students has been overwhelmingly positive. Students are taking pride in their work where they stay back during their own time to refine their tasks.
It has been rewarding for teachers to see students grow in terms of working cooperatively with their peer and teachers.
The CLI subject will continue to be taught throughout 2017. Students will continue to embark on a journey where they collaboratively work on higher order tasks. This drives the students to learn about real world issues that apply and affect them personally. If you have any questions or queries please don't hesitate to contact Miss Amanda Mansour on (02) 9670 6700.

Health Alert - Whooping Cough

Health Alert

There has recently been a case of Whooping Cough within our school. If your child has any of the symptoms of whooping cough, such as a dry or persistent cough, which may be especially bad at night, please see your doctor. If the cough has been present less than 4 weeks a swab test can be performed. If longer than 4 weeks a blood test can be performed. If your child has whooping cough, your doctor will arrange a course of antibiotic treatment. Antibiotics given early in the illness are effective in stopping the cough and in preventing spread to other people. If your doctor diagnoses whooping cough please advise the school and keep your child at home until they have taken at least 5 days of antibiotics. Whooping cough is very dangerous for small infants – please ensure that you and your family do not visit babies if you have a cough.

Over the last two weeks I have written to you to keep you informed of the school's response to the fire which occurred at our school and what has been a mammoth rebuild of temporary buildings since then. The flavour of those updates has been focused upon the "mechanics" of what has been happening.
In this update though, as we prepare to start the new school term, I wanted to take a more personal approach.

A message from the Careers Advisor to the School Community and Year 12 - Nepean Careers Market

The recent fire in our school has caused the loss of Career Education resources making it difficult to direct students to these resources, which enable them to make decisions concerning their transition from school and future career options.

A decision has been made therefore, to invite Year 12 students to go to the Nepean Careers Market on Thursday, 17/7/14 free of charge. If you have a child in Year 12 who has not paid for the Market then I urge them to consider this offer. All you need do is complete the attached Permission Note and return it to me, Ms Elks, on Tuesday, or Mrs Beamer on Wednesday before lunch.

Students who have paid for the Careers Market will need to complete a new Permission Note and return it to me, Ms Elks, on Tuesday, or Mrs Beamer on Wednesday before lunch.

St Clair High School - Recent events Q & A sheet

	What happened?

In the early hours of Sunday morning the school was extensively damaged as a result of a fire. Almost all of E Block been damaged or destroyed. Specifically, Maths, English, HSIE, LOTE, the Library, Teaching and Learning, CS1, CS2, The AV Room, Careers, Welfare, the Senior Study and the Canteen have been affected. Reports that the Science block was affected are incorrect. All other areas of the school remain intact.

	What caused the fire?
At this stage the cause of the fire is unknown. There is nothing at this time that would indicate that the fire was deliberately lit.

	What is being done?
Staff will be working through the holidays to ensure that we have put in place all of the measures necessary to enable learning to continue without interruption.

	When will Term 3 start?
Year 11 and 12 students will commence school on Tuesday the 15th July. The day will begin with an assembly whereby all students will receive the most up to date information. A representative from the Board of Studies will be in attendance to answer any specific questions or concerns. Year 12 will remain a priority and we will endeavour to make their path through the HSC as smooth as possible. Students in Years 7-10 will commence school on Wednesday 16th July with an assembly in the hall for 7-8 at 8:30am and for years 9-10 at 9:30am.

	Where will classes be taught?
Rooming for many classes will change, however all classes will take place. Demountables have been ordered and will be used for both senior and junior classes. A new timetable will be issued on day 1 to let students know of any changes.

How long will the rebuilding take?
Reconstruction will take a long time. We have been advised it could take up to 2 years for all works to be completed in full.

What happened to the things in student lockers?
We understand that some students have lost notes and resources as have many staff. Student lockers in the senior study were destroyed and the lockers outside room 9 were also damaged. We do not anticipate that anything from the lockers will be salvageable.

What should we do to get through this?
There will be challenges over the coming months; however, we know that together we can overcome these challenges. Support services are available for those who need them and can be accessed through Year Advisors. It will be important for students to focus on their studies as much as possible over the coming months. The St Clair community is renowned for its resilience and strong connections. While this event is distressing, we know that together we will overcome all the challenges that lay ahead.

What can I do to help?
Many people have asked how they can help. We would appreciate as many positive posts on social media as possible, especially the school Facebook page, to ensure a positive message is spread throughout the community. Once we have a better idea of what has survived the fire we might let you know how else you can help.

In the medium term there will be many fundraising activities planned to help us replace the school resources that have been lost.

How can I stay up to date on what is happening?
We will continue to update you via our school website, Facebook and Phone App in the weeks ahead. It is important for you to use these resources to keep up to date with matters as they progress.

Year 10 and 11 students only
Mission Australia conducts a yearly anonymous survey into the attitudes and beliefs of young people in order to provide support services. Our school has supported this data collection and uses the Mission Australia Survey Report in the planning for our Welfare activities throughout the year.

Year 11 will complete this activity in their mentor lesson and year 10 will be given a lesson in the next fortnight to complete this task. Students need to bring in their laptop to complete the electronic survey.

If you do NOT want your child to take part in this survey please contact Mrs Beamer directly on 9670 6700.

St Mary’s RSL Sub-Branch Scholarship Presentation 2012

	St Mary's RSL Sub-Branch Scholarship Presentation 2012

It was an amazing night of nights at St Mary's RSL on Thursday 22nd November for a select group of Year 10 students from schools in the local area. St Marys RSL Sub-Branch was celebrating their 10th anniversary of the Colin Shepherd OAM Memorial School Scholarship.

The celebration honoured past and present winners of the scholarship. Mrs Judy Shepherd was there to honour her late husband and to also present awards to this year's scholarship winners. Over the last ten years over $250 000 had been given to students.

Families, students and teachers enjoyed a light supper and were thoroughly entertained by the host and President Ron Kelly among other partons who shared stories with us. Past winners also engaged the audience and told us how their scholarship enriched their life, education and careers.

The students challenge was to present a research project that investigated an aspect of Australian's involvement in the military service. Topic areas were set by the members of the Sub-Branch.

Delphia Asemaga, Maaz Ansari and Lucinda Warren of St Clair High School were the three scholarship winners for 2012. The students were awarded with $2500, $1500 and $1000 respectively.

	Year 10 School Program – Term 4 - 21 November 2012

	Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,

The following information is designed to clearly set out the events and expectations for Year 10 students following their Yearly Examinations.

	1. ATTENDANCE

Following is an excerpt from a letter sent to school Principals by the Deputy Director-General of Schools in Term 3 2012.

With the new school leaving age, students in Year 10, who have not reached 17 years of age, are required to attend school until the third last day of Term 4 – Wednesday 19 December 2012.

Year 10 students who can demonstrate that they are leaving school to enter into full-time permanent employment and will not be resuming their studies at school in 2013 are able to leave school after the conclusion of Year 10 provided they have completed all their clearance obligations with the school. Students needing to leave school earlier should apply to the principal for an exemption.

	2. YEAR 10 CLEARANCE: THURSDAY 6TH. DECEMBER 2012.

The year 10 clearance day will occur on Thursday 6th December, 2012 in two stages:

A – K: 8.40am – 9.45am (Period 1)
L – Z: 11.40am – 12.45pm (Period 2)

Earlier this term the administration staff at St Clair High School sent out invoices for any outstanding fees. It would be appreciated if any school contributions you have not paid are finalised before 6.12.12. These are of two types subject materials contribution and the general contribution. The first of these must be paid before clearance can continue. In addition to this all other outstanding debts must be paid such as Excursions, Year 9 welfare Day, Gatehouse Girls. Library fines will need to be finalised by the Clearance Day.

The Student Clearance Form will be available from Miss Olmos in the Music Courtyard from 8.40am for students with surnames A-K and 11.40am for students L-Z on Thursday 6th December. All outstanding fees should have been paid prior to this date. If that is the case, your clearance form will be stamped "paid" and you may continue through the clearance procedure. If there are any outstanding amounts yet to be paid then you must return to the front office to pay them.

If you have a textbook for a particular subject, part of your clearance procedure is to return the textbook and school-owned equipment to the Faculty Representative in the courtyard. Once all material has been returned the representative will sign your form and "clear" you from that subject.

Once you have been to each Faculty representative return to Miss Olmos. Completed clearance forms are to be returned for final checking by Miss Olmos. Once "cleared" by Miss Olmos proceed to Mr Ralph's table for final sign off.

	3. YEAR 11 (2012) ENROLMENT DAY: THURSDAY 6TH. DECEMBER 2012.

Flannofest is a Western Sydney Region Drama Festival hosted by the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in Penrith. Open to Drama students in Yrs 9-11, each school is allocated a particular theatrical style and a director to work with. The Festival provides students with an opportunity to work in a professional theatre space as well as with artists working in the field. It gives them a real world experience of producing theatre and looking at it from a range of perspectives including that of actor, director and designer.

This year, Yr 10 Drama chose the very difficult style of Theatre of the Absurd and worked with Aimee Falzon from Ashfield Youth Theatre. With the support of Ms Olmos their Drama Teacher, Yr 10 Drama produced "Waiting for Cake."

"Waiting for Cake" follows in the tradition of Theatre of the Absurd playwrights Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter. It contains non-sensical, absurd dialogue, a timeless often fantastical setting, moments of discomfort and a pointless plotline. In "Waiting for Cake" zombie like ladies host tea at the bottom of their local swimming pool in the hope that cake will be brought soon for them to enjoy.

St Clair High School in association with the Professional Footballers Australia, Woolworths and LUCRF took part in the Heroes Program in 2011.

Four mentors from Sydney FC Bruno Cazarine, Liam Reddy, Scott Jamieson and Mark Bridge visited a group of St Clair High School students over a period of 8 weeks to teach the students about important values such as Respect, Teamwork, Fair Play, Pride in Representation and Leadership. The students undertook weekly activities and tasks, which focused on these values.

The program culminated with a St Clair Steps Community "Gala Day" where our students organised a "Skills Day" for the local primary school children. The program was a huge success.

Our students gained memorable and valuable experience from their mentors.

The Green Machine environmental club was established 3 years ago at St Clair High School. The Green Machine is a student driven club, which acknowledges the environment around the school, with the aim to improve the environmental learning area for all students and staff.

A section of the vegetable garden in front of the school.

Over the past 3 years the Green Machine have planted 100's of trees, bushes and shrubs aiming to improve the look of the school for students and the community as well as improve the overall environment of the area. Along with the planting of new plants the Green Machine maintain a vegie patch, which is currently growing Mint, French Tarragon, Basil, Oregano, Lemons.

Hundreds of plants have been planted in the school grounds.

In an initiative to beautify the school environment the Green Machine has set up recycling bins around the school grounds for aluminium cans. As a bonus of this scheme the money from recycling the cans is placed back into the school to purchase additional covered seating in playground areas and other school equipment.
This year the Green Machine started work on a Memorial Garden at the front of the school to honour those members of the school community who are no longer with us. This joint venture with the P&C consists of a large garden with memorial plaques placed throughout a spacious garden with a walking path.
St Clair High School Kitchen Garden Program

The St Clair High School garden program is harvesting their first crops that are heading to the kitchens for preparation into delicious fresh, seasonal recipes. We have been successful in growing celery, cabbage, cauliflower, snow peas, beans, passionfruit, brussels sprouts, tarragon, basil and lemon grass. The fruit trees and strawberries are establishing well.

The fundamental philosophy that underpins the SCHS Kitchen Garden Program is that by setting good examples and engaging student's curiosity, as well as their energy and their taste buds, we can provide positive and memorable food experiences that will form the basis of positive lifelong eating habits. By taking this holistic approach we're able to bring students back to the roots of good food. The SCHS Kitchen Garden Program connects students with the land, helps them understand what it is to nurture the soil and the seeds they plant in it, to live sustainably and to take responsibility for their own wellbeing.

It's amazing to hear students arguing over what vegetables they think we are growing and their amazement when they find out their either right or wrong. It is wonderful to be able to change perception at grass roots level and to have a wonderful environment to work in. The students are provided a unique opportunity to learn in an interactive way from teachers and other students who are passionate in their field.

We are also using the SCHS Kitchen Garden Program to recycle, using our Worm Farms. We use the organic waste from the Home Ec Faculty and staffrooms to feed our worms and is recycled into a rich fertilizer and used to feed our vegetable gardens.
