  • school programs and practices that protect and promote health and safety
  • supporting individual students who need help with health issues
  • providing first aid and temporary care of students who become unwell or who have an accident at school.

Student wellbeing

Like all NSW public schools, we provide safe learning and teaching environments to encourage healthy, happy, successful and productive students.

The department is committed to creating quality learning opportunities for children and young people. These opportunities support wellbeing through positive and respectful relationships and fostering a sense of belonging to the school and community.

The Wellbeing Framework for Schools helps schools support the cognitive, physical, social, emotional and spiritual development of students and allows them to connect, succeed and thrive throughout their education.

Welfare Team

Every teacher is a teacher of welfare. Students develop best in schools where teaching and learning occur in the context of student welfare and enhances their overall wellbeing.

The St Clair High School community promotes the wellbeing charter:

  • physical – lifelong physical activity and healthy nutritional choices.
  • social – positive relationships and a sense of belonging.
  • mental – positive self-concepts and provides a supportive and inclusive environment.
  • spiritual – lifelong aspiration, purpose and achievement.

Student welfare is enhanced when all members of the school community participate in the learning programs and life of the school.

Effective teaching and learning is best achieved in a safe, secure, well managed and positive environment in which staff, students, parents and the wider community work together to improve outcomes for all.

Student welfare is the concern of every member of staff. In its widest context, welfare covers the safety of all students in our care. The welfare team provides an extensive support system to assist all students with their physical, social, mental and spiritual wellbeing as outlined in our St Clair High School wellbeing charter.

Particular responsibilities for student welfare lies with the principal, deputy principals, head teacher of welfare, student advisers, assistant student advisers, school counsellors, head teacher of curriculum, careers adviser and school chaplain.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

At our school, we use Positive Behaviour for Learning – a whole-school approach for creating a positive, safe and supportive school climate where students can learn and develop. Our whole school community works together to establish expected behaviours and teach them to all students.

Merit awards system

Our school motto is ‘endeavour with courtesy, consideration and commonsense'. The central concept which drives the school is "personal best for everyone". The school merit award system is used to promote our school motto and central concept. This system seeks to identify and reward students who make significant and positive contributions within our school community and who strive for their personal best.

At St Clair High School, it is recognised that all students have the potential to excel in a variety of different areas. It is the responsibility of all staff to reward students on their positive behaviour and it is anticipated that the merit award system will:

  • reward students for sustained effort and achievement of excellence.
  • encourage all students to do better than they did yesterday.
  • develop and maintain a cooperative and supportive atmosphere among teachers, students and parents.
